Scott Shaffer publishes a great mobile blog I’ve followed for some time called The Pondering Primate. He posted on 3jam recently and made some interesting observations:
When I spent a couple months interviewing teenagers and asked “What do you want your mobile to do”, this was one of the highest rated responses.“Can you make a text message chatroom?”
After then describing the 3jam service, he concluded with:
I was wondering if there were any companies that were offering this. Great find Textually

A few days ago I got a call from Tyler who is in a fraternity at a university in Florida. He had read about us on a blog, and wanted to talk about a new way to use 3jam. His fraternity’s national hq wants them to set up a safe ride program, and 3jam is a perfect solution!
The idea is to sign up everyone in the house for 3jam. Then every Thursday, Friday and Saturday the night’s safe ride numbers are sent out via 3jam. Messages might be broken down by pledge class, so the list doesn’t get to big. This way, not only can people easily stay in touch, they have the safe ride number stored in their phone and one click access to get a ride home.
Tyler had some other great questions too:
Hi Andy,
I’ve added a bunch of friends and started playing with 3Jam. Really awesome stuff. Everyone I’ve shown it to has been blown away.
This morning, I sat down with our advisor from HQ and I gave him a demo and now he’s gotten started using the services. In fact, he wants to start using it with some of his team members from headquarters. However, he had one question for me to relay to you:
what is the maximum number of people could have in one chat? And I was also wondering if is possible yet to create groups?

Also, I was thinking a really cool feature that you could incorporate, would be the option to add contacts who are not on your contact list, but you have been involved in one or more 3jam chat sessions with.
Thanks!
Tyler
Currently, we don’t limit the number of people you can have on a group text chat. But there are some practical limitations. Text messages can only have 160 characters, so each extra person means there is slightly less room for the actual message. Also, the same way it is annoying to have someone ‘reply-to-all’ on a large email distribution list, it’s annoying to get on a group text chat with too many people. We’ve found that group text messages with 3 to 5 people in them work best. But we don’t limit you…so use it the way you think it works best! That said, keep in mind we have safeguards for abuse…and we will terminate any account that is spamming.
The answer to Tyler’s second question is that, yes, we do have group capabilities in 3jam…but they will be administered through the web interface (which will be available soon).
And being able to request to add people who aren’t in your contact list but you’ve been on a chat with is a great idea…and also coming soon!
We look forward to working with Tyler to help make 3jam work better for his fraternity. If you are in a fraternity or sorority and have ideas or questions about how you can use 3jam for your house, leave a comment or email me at andy [at] 3jam dot com.

I got a great email the other day from a user named Dan who suggested that we make available a record of various 3jam known issues and update it as they are fixed…similar to what you find on open source software projects. Here’s the email:
Andy,
Suggestion: Even though the 3jam isn’t a downloaded program, it would be helpful to have a changelog page so users (e.g. me) could visit periodically during development and see that 3jam is up to version .4 with x changes and y bugfixes. Perhaps I’m spoiled with open source software, where you know exactly what’s going on in development — but anything would be helpful.
Best,
Dan
One difference, of course, is that we’re running a service. But our basic viewpoint is that text messaging should be much better than it is today. And we need your help to make it so. There are dozens of things that you should be able to do with text messages but can’t. A tool like Dan’s suggesting, where 3jammers could even comment on known issues and suggest fixes, would be great.

I got a great email from a user who had some questions about adding people to his 3jam address book. I thought the question would be of interest to a lot of people, so I’m reposting it here:
Hi Andy,
I just read about 3jam on Treonauts and immediately signed up because it sounds like a great idea. I just wanted to know if you could add multiple numbers to your address book from one text:
add john doe (123)456-7890; add mary jane (098)765-4321; add scooter somebody (123)555-1234, etc.
This would of course cut down a lot of time if possible. If we are not able to do this for now however I think I read that you will be adding the capability to link/download/upload/sideload/whatever our current address books to a 3jam address book.
Thanks for the great innovation and taking the next step to “simplicity” in our everyday lives.

We do not yet support the ability to add more than one person in a single text message, but this will be coming soon. We know it takes longer than is ideal right now, and are working to make it as easy as possible to add people. Our web interface will be available soon, which will have many cool and slick ways to get your contacts into 3jam. Beyond the web site we are also planning some other very cool ways to make it as easy as possible to use 3jam. If you have any ideas or suggestions that you’d like to see, leave a comment or email me. Thanks again to everyone for the great feedback. We’re just trying to make text messaging work better!

I met Andrew Carton of Treonauts recently and was impressed by what he is doing for the Treo community. While 3jam has not officially launched yet, we decided to run a trial with his Treo users. The response has been fantastic, and my thanks to Andrew and to all the people who have signed up for and are using 3jam. To find out more about the trial and to read what people have been saying, read Andrew’s post.
